A monograph of the shallow-water Chalinidae (Porifera, Haplosclerida) of the Caribbean Naturalis
Weerdt, Wallie H. de.
All known species of the sponge family Chalinidae (Demospongiae, Haplosclerida) occurring in the shallower part of the Caribbean are described and taxonomically revised. The study is the result of collecting activities of the author and others throughout the Caribbean, and examination of type and other material in musea and institutes. In a previous revision of north-eastern Atlantic Chalinidae (De Weerdt, 1986, 1989), the family was subdivided into eight monophyletic species groups, with various states of the skeletal architecture as main synapomorphous (shared derived) characters. After examination of all available type species of the nominal genera of the family, the species groups are now given proper names, replacing the tentative names in the earlier...

A MULTI-SECTOR EXPORT BASE MODEL OF LONG-RUN REGIONAL EMPLOYMENT GROWTH AgEcon
Lego, Brian; Gebremedhin, Tesfa G.; Cushing, Brian.
The relationships between intersectoral export and local employment and regional economic growth are analyzed in a long-run equilibrium framework. Dynamic location quotients decompose regional employment into export and local components for multiple sectors. Johansen's Full-Information Maximum Likelihood (FIML) approach is used to identify the existence and resultant rank of the co-integrating relationship between sectoral export and local employment in West Virginia's four metropolitan areas. Empirical results indicate inter-sectoral basic and non-basic employment form a co-integrating system of equations. Furthermore, this analysis shows that inter-sector shocks to local and export employment may cause multipliers to be positive or negative in magnitude.

A multivariate approach to the association pattern of reciprocal translocations induced by chemicals and ionizing radiation in mouse germ cells Genet. Mol. Biol.
De Luca,J.C.; Ortiz Jaureguizar,E.; Dulout,F.N..
The degree of similarity between chemical and physical agents in their capacity to induce reciprocal translocations was analyzed by means of multivariate analysis techniques. The effect of three different doses of gamma rays, four doses of X-rays and different doses of adriamycin, mitomycin C, thio-tepa and bleomycin was analyzed. Data were arranged in a basic matrix by two methods: cluster analysis and ordination. Two main groups were found, one including doses of 9 and 10 Gy and the other including the remaining lower doses of ionizing radiation and the other chemicals. Various subgroups were found within the second group. Accordingly, using presence/absence data there was not a specific pattern of chromosomal damage induction for physical and chemical...

A Multivariate Statistical Approach to the Analysis of Rural Development AgEcon
Mazzocchi, Mario; Montresor, Elisa.
The aim of this work is to contribute to the definition of an analytical approach for evaluating the dynamics in progress in the agricultural and rural development at a territorial level. For this purpose principal components analysis and cluster analysis were applied and the different methodological approaches reviewed. A two-stage method is also proposed. This could provide the analytical tools to simplify and interpret the results of the territorial analyses, also in order to supply a flexible instrument to policy-makers. A case-study on the Emilia-Romagna region, in Italy, is presented.

A natureza fractal de ácidos húmicos Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Silva,A. C.; Mendonça,E. S.; Martins,M. L.; Reis,C..

A NECESSARY CONDITION FOR MARKET INTEGRATION TESTS: THE CASES OF THE U.S. BROILER INDUSTRY AgEcon
Goodwin, Harold L., Jr.; Djunaidi, Harjanto.
Most studies on price relationships in spatial markets assume that perfect information is a public good. However, during the last two decades, the food industry in the U.S. has experienced a dramatic structural change, as have the structures of commodity markets; this is especially the case in the broiler industry. Tests for the presence of market integration are conducted within the framework of Neo-classical theory of the firm. Grower costs and transportation in five southern U.S. broiler states (AL, AR, GA, MS, NC) are considered in deriving necessary conditions before any conclusion on market integration is reached. Using both parametric and nonparametric tests, this study found that all price pairs have a long-run price relationship and markets are...

A new appendicularian, Oikopleura gorskyi n. sp. (Tunicata), from norwegian fjords Naturalis
Flood, Per R..
A new appendicularian, Oikopleura gorskyi n. sp., recovered from numerous plankton samples taken at depths between 1200 and 400 m in Sognefjorden, western Norway, as well as in more shallow water in this and other western Norwegian fjords, is described. The species is easily identified by the limited extension of its oikoblastic epithelium, the small size of its right stomach lobe and the disposition of its subchordal cells in two segments of an antero-posterior line with some 13 and 8 plateshaped cells respectively. The unique pattern of its house rudiment inclusion body and the unique cell nuclear pattern in its oikoblastic epithelium are additional, although less easily observable, characters of this species.

A new concept of relatedness and its significance to the theory of social evolution Genet. Mol. Biol.
Drummond,M.S..
Data on primitively social groups of Hymenoptera have been somewhat contradictory with respect to kin recognition, degree of relatedness and social evolution. This study presents a new concept of "relatedness coefficient". Called "aggregated relatedness", the hypothesis here introduced proposes that genes shared by any two individuals affect formation of family units to an extent dependent on their frequency and manner of dispersion in neighboring populations.

A new genus of Oniscidea from South America and a phylogenetic analysis of related genera (Crustacea: Isopoda: Philosciidae) Naturalis
Leistikow, Andreas.
In a collection of terrestrial isopods from Venezuela, a distinct species was identified which does not fit any of the known genera. Therefore, a new taxon Metaprosekia gen.n. is instituted to accomodate the new species. An analysis of its morphological characters revealed a close relationship to the genus Prosekia Vandel, 1968 and allied genera. The phylogeny of this group is discussed and one of its poorly known representatives, Xiphoniscus mirabilis Vandel, 1968 is redescribed on the basis of the type material.

A NEW STRUCTURE FOR AGRICULTURE: A REVOLUTION FOR RURAL AMERICA AgEcon
Drabenstott, Mark.
U.S. agriculture is undergoing a tidal wave of change in its structure. A shift to supply chains and away from commodities and commodity markets is the hallmark of this new wave. The new agriculture of the 21st century will bring with it a new geography that may be nothing short of a revolution for rural America. Supply chains will tend to concentrate activity geographically and change the local economic dynamic where they do locate. Finally, the tide of change in agriculture's structure means a whole new slate of policy issues. Concentration, market access, and the delivery mechanism for government support all become bigger concerns with supply chains. But perhaps the biggest policy challenge looming ahead is addressing rural America's economic...

A New World Chaos? International Institutions in the Information Age AgEcon
Kerr, William A..
The technological revolutions that underlie the new information age will tax considerably the abilities of existing international institutions to bring order to international relations. Rapid rates of change may lead to chaos if international institutions cannot evolve to accommodate those changes. In some cases, new organisations will be required. The role given international organisations in establishing order in the latter half of the 20th century is reviewed. The new challenges presented by the information age are outlined. Whether the existing international organisations will be sufficiently flexible to accommodate the changes brought by the information age is assessed.
